Ujjayi Pranayama: The Victorious Ocean Breath
20 March 2026
What is Ujjayi Pranayama?
Ujjayi, meaning 'victorious' in Sanskrit, is a foundational pranayama technique that creates a gentle oceanic sound in the throat. By slightly constricting the glottis while breathing through the nose, you produce an audible 'ha' sound—like fogging a mirror. This simple yet powerful technique has been used for centuries to enhance focus, build internal heat, and cultivate a meditative state.
Benefits of Ujjayi Breath
- Calms the nervous system: The rhythmic sound naturally settles racing thoughts
- Builds internal warmth: Perfect for energising morning practice or cold days
- Improves focus: The audible breath anchors your mind to the present moment
- Enhances yoga flow: Ujjayi breath synchronises beautifully with movement
- Regulates body temperature: Helps balance pitta dosha naturally
How to Practice Ujjayi Breath
Step 1: Sit comfortably in any meditation pose. Take a few natural breaths to settle in.
Step 2: Inhale deeply through your nose, feeling your belly expand.
Step 3: On the exhale, gently constrict your throat muscles—imagine whispering 'ha' while breathing. You should hear a soft ocean-like sound.
Step 4: Keep your lips closed throughout. The sound comes from your throat, not your mouth.
Step 5: Continue for 5–10 minutes, maintaining equal length inhales and exhales. Don't force the sound; let it arise naturally.
Step 6: When finished, return to normal breathing and notice the calm awareness within.
Begin with just 3–5 minutes daily and gradually extend your practice. Ujjayi breath is incredibly versatile—use it during asana practice, meditation, or whenever you need grounding.
