Ujjayi Pranayama: The Ocean Breath for Calm Focus

Ujjayi Pranayama: The Ocean Breath for Calm Focus

26 March 2026

What is Ujjayi Pranayama?

Ujjayi, meaning 'victorious' or 'conquering' in Sanskrit, is a foundational breathing technique that creates a gentle ocean-like sound in the throat. By slightly constricting the glottis (the opening between your vocal cords), you produce an audible, soothing whisper as breath passes through. This ancient practice is widely used in vinyasa yoga flows and meditation practices across Australia and worldwide.

Benefits of Ujjayi Breath

  • Calms the nervous system: The rhythmic sound and controlled pace activate your parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety
  • Improves focus: The auditory feedback keeps your mind anchored to the present moment
  • Regulates body temperature: Ujjayi naturally cools the body, making it ideal for warming yoga practices
  • Enhances oxygen absorption: The extended breathing cycle increases prana (life force energy) throughout your body

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Find a comfortable seated position (cross-legged, kneeling, or on a chair) with your spine upright
  2. Inhale deeply through your nose with your mouth closed
  3. Exhale through your mouth as if fogging a mirror, creating a 'ha' sound
  4. Now close your mouth and exhale through your nose while maintaining that throat constriction—you should hear a gentle ocean-like sound
  5. Continue for 5–10 rounds, keeping inhales and exhales equal length (try 4 counts each)
  6. Breathe naturally for a few moments, noticing the calm

Tip: Practice 2–3 minutes daily. Ujjayi works beautifully before meditation or as part of your asana practice. Listen inwardly to your breath—the sound should be audible only to you.
